CHAPTER SEVEN

THOMAS WOKE ALONE in bed some hours later, after Daisy had convinced him to get some sleep while she oversaw breakfast for the masses. He would have protested except for the weariness which had overtaken his body and the prospect of the busy day ahead. The needs of the village and its residents would require all the strength he could muster in the aftermath of the flood.

There was a soft knock on the bedroom door. ‘Thomas? Are you awake?’ It was Daisy calling him softly.

‘Yes. Come on in.’ He sat up in bed and raked his hand through his hair in an attempt to make himself more presentable.

Daisy emerged, carrying a tray of tea things and what smelled like a cooked breakfast. His stomach rumbled and he realised it had been an age since he’d eaten anything. Even if he had drunk his weight in tea over the past twenty-four hours.

‘I brought you some breakfast. Everyone else has been fed and is heading back into the village to see what can be done.’

‘You didn’t have to do that. Although I am starving.’ He took the tray with gratitude and set to work filling his belly with bacon and eggs.

As he tucked in, he was aware of Daisy’s lingering glance at his bare chest, which only increased his hunger for more than breakfast. It wasn’t easy putting last night behind him when she kept staring at him as though she was ready to jump into bed beside him again.

‘Was there enough food for everyone? Did you manage to get anything to eat yourself?’ he asked, attempting to distract them both from the half-empty bed where she had lain only hours earlier.

‘I did. Queenie brought some more supplies from the corner shop and helped me cook for everyone.’

‘That’s very kind of her. I’ll pay for it all, of course, and thank you, Daisy, for covering for me. I should get up and do my own inspection of the village.’ He took another bite of toast and gulp of tea before throwing the covers back.

Daisy’s eyes flitted everywhere, as though she didn’t know where to look. He wasn’t naked, but he might as well have been by the way she was reacting. It amused him that she was acting so coyly when she had been anything but shy in bed with him before he’d had an attack of conscience and called a halt to their fun. He got out of bed and stretched, enjoying the lustful look it drew from his audience.

Yes, he had been the one to put an end to things last night before they went too far, but that didn’t mean his ego didn’t enjoy a little boost every now and then.

‘I...er... I’ll let you get dressed, then I’ll go with you to see what’s needed in the village.’ She scurried back out of the door, pretending she hadn’t done more than just look last night. He could still feel where she had touched him, the memory growing stronger by the second.
